French Speaking Countries in Africa Literacy Project

Languages of instruction in schools in Africa include English, French, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, and many African languages.  Out of the 54 African nations, 21 countries and two French islands use French as the official language of communication. The countries make up about 30% of Africa’s 1.3 billion inhabitants.

Religion in French-speaking Africa:  The twentieth century saw Christianity in Africa flourish, particularly in the sub-Saharan area, where numerous denominations expanded. This was partly due to Protestant evangelization in partnership with local churches. Catholicism has also experienced significant growth. Nearly a quarter of all Christians now live in Africa.  Christianity is the most widely practiced religion in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa (63%), ahead of Islam (30%) and African traditional religions.

French Primer Development:  In some countries illiterates who speak French are taught to read using the Literacy & Evangelism International primer series. The primer needs to be revised and updated, having been developed almost 25 years ago.

We hope to develop a series of three Bible-content primers in French for literacy ministry in French-speaking countries in Africa. In writing the primers, we hope to bring together 10 writers representing the different dialects of French spoken across the continent.  We will meet for at least 15 days in 2024 in order to write the new materials. A donation of any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Cost of the  Primer Construction Worshop
