LE-Kenya: Kisii Literacy Primer Project
The Kisii Literacy Project is a strategic, faith-based initiative designed to address a critical gap in functional literacy among the Abagusii people of western Kenya. While more than 2.5 million people speak Ekegusii (Kisii) and it remains a vibrant mother tongue, there are adults, particularly in rural areas, among women, and among older generations, who are unable to read or write it with confidence. This “latent illiteracy” limits access to Scripture, education, health information, and meaningful participation in community and economic life.
We are seeking funding to develop and implement a Bible-based, mother-tongue literacy program that will empower individuals to read, understand, and apply written content in their daily lives. Research consistently shows that literacy in one’s first language significantly improves comprehension, retention, and long-term impact, especially in community and faith contexts.
The project will include the development of two Ekegusii literacy primers, learner workbooks, and teacher guides; training local pastors and facilitators; and establishing church- and community-based literacy classes. The implementation will follow a proven model: material development, pilot testing, printing and distribution, training, and program rollout.
The total funding required is $7,920
- Materials development $3,920
- Printing of 500 copies $3,000
- Training and mobilization $1,000.
Your support will help restore dignity through literacy, deepen engagement with Scripture, strengthen churches, and contribute to lasting community transformation.
